Colin Dieden is gearing up to release his debut solo EP and single under the moniker “Little Hurt”. Former lead singer of the internationally successful indie-alt-rock band The Mowgli’s, Dieden recently inked a solo recording contract with RED MUSIC, a label venture of Sony Music, and his new music as Little Hurt is a refreshing hybrid of alternative, rock, pop, and dance unlike anything on the radio today.
What inspired you to pursue music? Music was the only thing I knew how to do, it’s the only thing I’m good at. I don’t really have a backup plan. I started doing this when I was young and I never looked back.
What are your aspirations as a musician? Well I want to take this project as far as I possibly can. I want to be honest as possible. I wanna feel like everything I create is challenging to myself, like emotionally and not just write some general bullshit lyric people wanna hear. I want to make something special, even if it’s challenging.
What was your inspiration for your latest single “Good As It Gets” ? I think the inspiration for that was because of all the change recently, with me leaving my band of ten years. I was putting myself through a lot emotionally and I thought maybe this is as good as it gets. Maybe I should just allow myself to be happy for once in my life instead of always trying to make things more difficult for myself because the way I’m wired. I’m like wired to never be content by anything ever, like nothing is ever good enough. In that moment I was like fuck, maybe this is it.
What is the story behind your moniker “Little Hurt” ? I went through like 15 to 20 different ideas for names and no one liked them, everyone shut them down. I was thinking about names and I remembered my little league baseball name was “Little Hurt” that was on the back of my jersey. I got it from the professional baseball player Frank Thomas who went by “The Big Hurt”. People think it sounds like a soundcloud rapper called “Lil Hurt” and it’s not, I want to make that very clear. Although, I love that stuff so if people interpret it as that it’s awesome.
Besides making music, what else do you like to do? Right now I don’t have a lot of time for everything else. I’m not in the studio 24/7 but I am working on this almost 24/7. I like watching TV man and chilling. I just watched this show called “Dark Tourist”, it’s about this guy that goes to all these dark tourist attractions, it’s fucking awesome.
Is this the only solo project we can expect from you? This is probably gonna be it, I think the Little Hurt is gonna be it. I haven’t even launched this project yet so I can’t even start thinking about the next one.
What makes you think you can eat sushi for the rest of your life and never get bored of it?
I could eat sushi everyday for the rest of my life and never get bored of it, I swear. You can different kinds of fish and rolls. I eat the negiri, which is basically the fish and rice. I don’t do the rolls that are baked in mayo, I don’t fuck with that shit.
